SUMMARY:Plein Air 101
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, May 15 \, 7:00-8:30pm for Plein Air 101 at the Wellesley Free Library  \n  \nAs the weather warms\, and summer travel plans are in the works\, many people are inspired to get back outside to observe\, sketch and paint. For some\, plein air painting can be challenging without the usual studio conveniences\, but the benefits of painting from life can be quite surprising. Artist Dan Schultz shares some thoughts on how plein air can help your painting practice. So in hopes of inspiring people to venture out to paint from life\, the WSA is having a program on May 15 at 7:00pm at the Wellesley Free Library to help simplify the plein air process. Come learn from fellow members and or share your experiences about the various artist kits for watercolor\, oil\, acrylic and pastel\, and see how to tackle this practice. This evening is also a wonderful opportunity to come meet and chat with WSA members. Join us for light refreshments beginning at 6:45pm.  \nWSA Members: Mai Mai Pietrowski\, Joanna Dole\, Nancy Present Van Broekhoven and Mark Richards will share their experiences and address some of these questions: \n\nHow do you get organized for plein air painting?\nWhat supplies do you put in your “box” and why?\nHow do you set up everything and how do you find a perfect spot?\nWhat is the best time to paint outside for you and why?\nWhat are tips and tricks you have learned?\nWhy do you love it so much?

DESCRIPTION:The Wellesley Society of Artists (WSA) and the Needham Art Association (NAA)\, in partnership with the Wellesley Free Library\, is hosting their annual joint artist demonstration on Saturday\, April 5\, 2025 at the Wellesley Free Library\, Wakelin Room with artist Nancy Friese. Please join us for light refreshments at 1:15pm followed by the WSA Gratitude show awards announcement and demo 1:30 – 3:30pm. This program is free and open to the public. \n“Water Based Painting in View of Nature: Materials\, Methods and Practice” \nThe afternoon workshop will be divided into three sections. First we will have an overview of the different basic qualities of watercolor\, gouache and acrylic water media painting and drawing materials with suggestions from the guest artist and input from any experienced participants.  Attendees may create small sampler sheets of each as takeaways. Then a short demonstration about the additive and subtractive methods of building a composition will be shared including working wet over dry\,  broad to detail\, light to dark\, and a whole surface touch.  In closing\, a few of the guest artist’s own finished paintings done from observation will be shown and explained with her tips for working in open-view of nature.  Why is perceptual painting of value\, how is observing the natural world rewarding\, and what ways may water mediums animate an idea will be a focus from our artistic vantage.  Participants may bring one small piece of their own to share as an ending. \nMore about Nancy Friese… \nNancy Friese is a painter-printmaker who works in open-air. SUMMARY:TCAN Show - "Do You See What I See?"
DESCRIPTION:Come join us in celebration of abstract art! The Wellesley Society Of Artists presents “Do You See What I See?” at The Center for Arts Natick February 1-28. The show features artwork of over 25 member artists. Even if you are not going to a TCAN event\, you can see the show during box office hours. \nArtist Mark Rothko once described the relationship between the observer and the painting as “a consummated experience between the picture and the viewer. Nothing should stand in the way between the painting and the viewer.” With that in mind\, participants submitted artwork that does not attempt to represent an accurate depiction of a visual reality\, but instead uses shapes\, colors\, forms\, and marks to achieve effect and meaning. This definition may include the realm of surrealism that seeks to challenge accepted norms. In showcasing abstract art\, artists have sought to express insights and explore ideas without the anchor of representational symbols.

Learn the tricks of the trade to create accurate photographs of your 2-dimensional artwork from a seasoned professional who regularly works with artists to create images used for gallery portfolios\, giclée print reproduction\, and museum dioramas. A live demonstration and clear\, step-by-step instructions will guide you toward success in making glare\, poor color\, and key-stoned images a thing of the past.\n\nAward-winning photographer Lynne Damianos earned her BS in Photography from Rochester Institute of Technology. SUMMARY:"Curating Vermeer" with Tracy Rubin
DESCRIPTION:The Wellesley Society of Artists in partnership with the Wellesley Free Library (WFL)  present “Curating Vermeer” a talk with MFA gallery instructor Tracy Rubin on December 5 at 7:00pm in the Wakelin Room. The exhibition\, “Vermeer” which opened at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam\, The Netherlands in spring 2023 was more than a box office success.  It was sold out within days\, if not hours\, and people scrambled to somehow gain access.   \nThe exhibition lived up to all the hype because it was expertly curated.  It was an absolute delight to the eye and food for the soul.  The hanging of paintings\, the wall text\, the wall color palette all related artfully to the works and enhanced the experience. Tracy will “deconstruct” how the exhibition was conceived and presented\, paying attention to what anyone who is hanging a show should consider.  Tracy  said “Hanging Vermeer” seemed like a better title for this talk\, but alas\, sounded rather threatening.  Hence\, “Curating Vermeer”.  \nAbout Tracy Rubin \nTracy Rubin has been a gallery instructor at the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston since 1986.  Over that time she has led tours for both student and adult groups\, as well as given talks as a guest lecturer.  Her MFA training was provided by museum curators and college professors from such institutions as Boston University\, Wellesley College\, Mt. Holyoke College\, and Tufts University. Guides are only allowed to give tours in a museum collection upon completion of a year-long course in that subject area. It takes seven years to complete all the courses.  She also helped with research for the MFA exhibition and companion catalog\, “The Art That is Life”\, that was open in 1987.  Tracy has presented at various conferences in the United States such as the National Docent Symposium and the American Academy of Religion. She holds a B.A. from Smith College and a Master of Theological Studies from Harvard Divinity School with a concentration in the intersection of art and religion.

She holds a master’s degree in fine arts from UNCG in North Carolina and attended the New York Studio School\, studying under Graham Nickson and John Dubrow. Influenced by Fairfield Porter and Richard Diebenkorn she is primarily a plein air landscape and still life painter. She is an artist member of the Copley Society in Boston. \nChildhood summer vacations were spent either on Cape Cod where her family history is traced back to the whaling trade on Martha’s Vineyard or up in Muskoka Canada visiting family and her great Uncle Lowrie Warrener’s studio and cottage. Warrener was a well- known Canadian abstract modernist painter (1900-1983). \nAfter ten years of painting in Provincetown and exhibiting her work in New York City\, Hillary Osborn and her husband Doug Rugh\, also an oil painter\, moved to studio/gallery space in 2008 at the historic Queen’s Buyway building on Palmer Avenue in Falmouth Massachusetts.
