SUMMARY:Chelsea Sebastian: Visual Chronicle in the James E. Mahoney Foyer at the Wellesley Free Library
DESCRIPTION:WSA member Chelsea Sebastian’s solo show Visual Chronicle in the James E. Mahoney Foyer at the Wellesley Free Library is on exhibit for the month of October. She is a representational oil painter who creates reflections of her daily life from her studio in Wellesley\, MA. She works from sketches\, photographs\, and memory\, often combining images to compose poignant paintings of vernacular places. She derives inspiration from her childhood on a small farm\, extensive world travel\, and New England’s dramatic seasons and dynamic community. Her artwork is held in collections throughout the United States and Canada. Recently\, she was chosen to be part of the U.S. State Department’s ‘Art in Embassies’ program.

DESCRIPTION: \nThe Wellesley Society of Artists in partnership with the Wellesley Free Library invite you to come learn “How Creative Expression Can Benefit Older Adults” on October 15th at 7:00-8:00pm at the Wellesley Free Library in the Wakelin Room. Please join us for light refreshments and conversation beginning at 6:30pm. This program is sponsored in part by a grant from the Wellesley Cultural Council\, and is free and open to the public. \n \nThe journey of aging can be our most creative chapter yet—full of expression\, connection\, and growth. Through the inspiring stories of three older artists\, we’ll see how making art can support healthy and meaningful aging. Together\, we’ll look at the joy and vitality that come from lifelong artistic expression\, especially in our later years. We’ll also reflect on how aging and the arts influence each other—revealing the powerful\, uplifting role that creative expression can play throughout our lives. \n \nRaquel Chapin Stephenson\, PhD\, ATR-BC\, LCAT\nDr. Stephenson is a Professor of Art Therapy at Lesley University and Founder of Creative Aging Solutions. Her practice\, research and scholarship are at the intersection of aging and creativity\, including her book Art Therapy and Creative Aging: Reclaiming Elderhood\, Health and Wellbeing. She was co-founder and teaching artist for the Creative Approaches to Healthy Aging program\, funded by two NEA ArtWorks Grants\, and founded New York University’s Creative Aging Therapeutic Services. DESCRIPTION:Please join the Wellesley Society of Artists in partnership with the Wellesley Free Library for an afternoon of  life drawing with artist and teacher Ron Krouk on Sunday\, November 9th\, 1:30-3:30pm. Attendees are invited to bring their own sketch book and drawing utensils\, or tablets to follow along with Ron. The program will begin with the announcement of awards for the WSA Annual Library show presented by the judge\, Patrick McCay. Join us for light refreshments beginning at 1:15pm and chance to meet local artists. This program is free and open to the public. Attendees are invited to bring a non perishable food item for the Wellesley Food Pantry. \n \n\nThe Practice of Life Drawing with Ron Krouk \nA demonstration of some approaches to developing and improving drawing skills. \n1.  10 minutes:  Brief Introduction about practicing and sharpening observation skills vs “making art”\, and about why life drawing\, since at least the Renaissance\, has been part of studio training. \n\n\n2.  15-30 minutes:  Gesture Drawing. Participants must bring their own supplies.                                               \nLearn how to paint an emotive portraits in transparent watercolor from start to finish! In this workshop\, the process of creating a portrait will be broken down into bite-sized pieces. We’ll begin by drawing basic structural shapes based on the value scale from provided reference\, explore both wet-on-wet and dry-brush techniques\, discuss flesh-tone “recipes”\, and cover the importance of lighting\, composition\, and narration in portraiture. \nMore about Irena Roman… \nIrena Roman is an award-winning transparent watercolorist from Scituate\, MA. She holds a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design and an MFA from Syracuse University. She achieved Signature Status from the American Watercolor Society in 2012 and \nDolphin Fellowship status in 2023. She also holds signature membership with the Transparent Watercolor Society of America\, the New England Watercolor Society\, the Watercolor Honor Society\, and American Women Artists. \nIrena’s paintings are in many corporate and private collections\, including Toray International Inc.\, Tokyo\, Japan\, and The National Fire Protection Association\, Boston\, MA. Her work is regularly included in national and international competitions and has been featured in several publications\, including a 2024 feature story in  The Art of Watercolour magazine.\n \nIn addition to being a painter\, Irena is a professor at Massachusetts College of Art and Design\, Boston\, with over thirty years of teaching experience.
