SUMMARY:Johan S. Ellefsen Exhibition - Brush Strokes of Water and Clouds
DESCRIPTION:  \nJohan S. Ellefsen Exhibition\nBrush Strokes of Water and Clouds\nat the Wellesley Free Library in the James E. Mahoney Foyer \nJanuary 3-31\, 2025 \n  \n \nJohan’s art exhibit opened at the Wellesley Free Library on Friday\, January 3rd\, 2025 and runs through January 31. The exhibit displays sixteen oil paintings offering a selection of the artist’s journey and his long-standing interest in the impressionist style.  \nJohan S. Ellefsen is a self-taught artist\, a writer and\, by day\, an attorney. He left behind his native country of Bolivia to live in Wellesley\, MA. He is an Exhibiting Member of the Wellesley Society of Artists since 2023. His first exhibition was in 2006 in the library of the Lycée International de Saint-Germain-en-Laye\, France\, where he showed a series of drawings from sculptures from the Louvre Museum. In 2021\, he exhibited his oil paintings in the Nemacolin Resort in Pennsylvania. More recently\, in December 2024\, he obtained the Yale Nicolls Award for Best Interpretation of the Natural World with his painting “Canadaway Creek.” He is inspired by the temperamental nature of water and the physical texture of oil paints. His current work focuses on landscapes in an impressionist style.

SUMMARY:"Curating Vermeer" with Tracy Rubin
DESCRIPTION:The Wellesley Society of Artists in partnership with the Wellesley Free Library (WFL)  present “Curating Vermeer” a talk with MFA gallery instructor Tracy Rubin on December 5 at 7:00pm in the Wakelin Room. The exhibition\, “Vermeer” which opened at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam\, The Netherlands in spring 2023 was more than a box office success.  It was sold out within days\, if not hours\, and people scrambled to somehow gain access.   \nThe exhibition lived up to all the hype because it was expertly curated.  It was an absolute delight to the eye and food for the soul.  The hanging of paintings\, the wall text\, the wall color palette all related artfully to the works and enhanced the experience. Tracy will “deconstruct” how the exhibition was conceived and presented\, paying attention to what anyone who is hanging a show should consider.  Tracy  said “Hanging Vermeer” seemed like a better title for this talk\, but alas\, sounded rather threatening.  Hence\, “Curating Vermeer”.  \nAbout Tracy Rubin \nTracy Rubin has been a gallery instructor at the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston since 1986.  Over that time she has led tours for both student and adult groups\, as well as given talks as a guest lecturer.  Her MFA training was provided by museum curators and college professors from such institutions as Boston University\, Wellesley College\, Mt. Holyoke College\, and Tufts University. Guides are only allowed to give tours in a museum collection upon completion of a year-long course in that subject area. It takes seven years to complete all the courses.  She also helped with research for the MFA exhibition and companion catalog\, “The Art That is Life”\, that was open in 1987.  Tracy has presented at various conferences in the United States such as the National Docent Symposium and the American Academy of Religion. She holds a B.A. from Smith College and a Master of Theological Studies from Harvard Divinity School with a concentration in the intersection of art and religion.

The talk and demo\, titled Changing Your Scale: Re-Vision in Landscape Painting will give an idea of how one can change a smaller oil study into a larger format. What are the considerations at play? Audience questions will be welcome.\n \nAwards will be announced at 1:30pm immediately followed by Hillary’s talk/demo. Join us for light refreshments beginning at 1:15pm and meet local artists. This program is in partnership with the Wellesley Free Library and is FREE and Open to the Public. She holds a master’s degree in fine arts from UNCG in North Carolina and attended the New York Studio School\, studying under Graham Nickson and John Dubrow. Influenced by Fairfield Porter and Richard Diebenkorn she is primarily a plein air landscape and still life painter. She is an artist member of the Copley Society in Boston. \nChildhood summer vacations were spent either on Cape Cod where her family history is traced back to the whaling trade on Martha’s Vineyard or up in Muskoka Canada visiting family and her great Uncle Lowrie Warrener’s studio and cottage. Warrener was a well- known Canadian abstract modernist painter (1900-1983). \nAfter ten years of painting in Provincetown and exhibiting her work in New York City\, Hillary Osborn and her husband Doug Rugh\, also an oil painter\, moved to studio/gallery space in 2008 at the historic Queen’s Buyway building on Palmer Avenue in Falmouth Massachusetts.

SUMMARY:Training Eyes\, Minds and Hearts: Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) and the Art of Healthcare
DESCRIPTION:This is the second “Art and Wellness” program presented by the Wellesley Society of Artists in partnership with the Wellesley Free Library and supported in part by a grant from the Wellesley Cultural Council. The arts are increasingly playing an integral role in both health and healthcare. Integrating the arts into our lives and communities can enrich cultural life and support well being.  Join us to learn more on Wednesday\, October 2nd 7:00-8:30pm at the Wellesley Free Library. This program is free and open to the public. \nTraining Eyes\, Minds and Hearts: Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) and the Art of Healthcare \nwith Corinne Zimermann\nThere is a growing call for better integration of the arts and humanities with medicine.  According to the American Association of Medical Colleges\, the arts and humanities have a “unique and unrealized role in preparing and equipping physicians for 21st-century challenges.” And for over a decade\, the number of partnerships between art museums and healthcare organizations\, including medical schools\, hospitals\, and clinics–has been growing. In this interactive presentation\, museum educator Corinne Zimmermann will share how the Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) and museum-based practices are being used in medical schools and healthcare organizations to hone observation and critical thinking skills\, improve team dynamics\, cultivate empathy\, and support well-being.  \nCorinne is the co-author of Activating the Art Museum: Designing Experiences for the Health Professions (Rowman & Littlefield). She co-founded the Harvard Macy Art Museum-based Health Professions Education Fellowship\, a pioneering professional development program that introduces innovative ways to use the arts to advance health professions educational goals\, skills and attitudes. She is a co-founder of VTS@Work and is currently co-teaching Training Our Eyes\, Minds\, and Hearts: VTS for Health Care Professionals through Harvard Medical School’s Continuing Education Program.

SUMMARY:Paul Alie Workshop: Adding Acrylic Ink to Watercolor for Textural Effects
DESCRIPTION:The Wellesley Society of Artists and the Needham Recreation Department are pleased to offer a workshop taught by Paul Alie\, a renown watercolor artist and teacher on Thursday\, September 12th from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at the Rosemary Recreation Complex\, 178 Rosemary Street\, Needham.  The title of the workshop is “Adding Acrylic Ink to Watercolor for Textural Effects.”  The cost of the workshop is $30.  The fee does not cover supplies\, which each student must purchase prior to the workshop. This is a workshop for experienced watercolor artists. \nAs a watercolor artist\, Paul has always enjoyed creating textures to subjects that lend themselves to textural experimentation such as rocks\, rusted objects\, baskets and other items.  Paul is a member of the Newton Art Association\, the Newton Watercolor Society and a Signature Member of the New England Watercolor Society.  He teaches watercolor painting at the New Art Center in Newtonville and accepts private students. \nRegistration will be handled by the Needham Recreation Center at needhamprograms.com.  Participants will be provided with a supply list for this workshop at the time of registration.  Those individuals who prefer to register in person may do so at the Needham Recreation Offices located 175 Rosemary Street\, Needham \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nMore about Paul Alie… \nAs a watercolor artist Paul has always enjoyed creating textures and looks for subjects that lend themselves to textural experimentation such as rocks\, baskets rusted objects\, even feathers and wings. By adding small amounts of acrylic ink to wet watercolor washes he found that he could bring textural effects to a different level than with watercolor alone. Paul is a member of the Newton Art Association\, the Newton Watercolor Society and a Signature Member of the New England Watercolor Society. He teaches watercolor painting at the New Art Center in Newtonville MA and privately. You can see more of his work and process at www.aliestudio.com. A brief video demo of this technique can be found on his website under “videos”.

SUMMARY:Laura Sheuerell Solo Show "Water\, Above and Below the Horizon Line"
DESCRIPTION:WSA member Laura Sheuerell’s  solo show “Water\, Above and Below the Horizon Line” is on exhibit at the Newton Free Library\, July 2-29\, 2024. Opening Reception July 11 at 7-8pm. \nLaura Scheuerell has entitled her show “Water\, Above and Below the Horizon Line”.  In describing the exhibit\, Laura provides the following in her own words: “Laura Scheuerell paints\, collages and builds her 2 and 3-dimensional mixed media art in layers. With WATER as the principal theme\,  she includes fish and their worlds below and above the horizon line. These habitats present various scenarios in a sometimes humorous cartoon-like form. On the water top is the allure of glimmering light bouncing off waves\, lily pads and shorelines. Below is a secret world of sunken artifacts. She is particularly fascinated with the vertical velocity and the powerful plunging drop of waterfalls.  Having grown up just 3 miles north of the booming and crashing natural wonder\, Niagara Falls\, Laura remembers sensing the misty\, negative ion-infused air. Summer visits with family in Canada on a glacier lake north of Ottawa introduced her to the underwater culture of fish. These recollections have inspired this exhibit.”  \nArtist-provided biography: Laura Scheuerell is a visual artist. She maintains her private art studio at The Howard Street Studios in Framingham\, MA. where she is an active\, participating member of the group collective. Laura is an exhibiting member of The Wellesley Society of Artists and has recently had shows at Ula Cafe in Jamaica Plain\, the Armory Cafe in Sommerville\, Sweetwater Cafe in Natick and Pavement Coffee\, Boylston St\, Boston.

SUMMARY:Frederick "Fritz" Kubitz - "All About Boston" Solo Retrospective Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:A member of the Wellesley Society of Artists for over 50 years\, 95 year old artist and prominent local architect Frederick “Fritz” Kubitz to offer up a painted ode to the city of Boston this April. \n \nTo coincide with the Boston Marathon and One Boston Day\, The Guild of Boston Artists is proud to present “All About Boston”\, a solo retrospective exhibition of cityscapes in oil and watercolor by nationally recognized artist and prominent local architect Frederick Kubitz. The exhibition will hang in the Guild’s Newbury Street gallery from March 30th – April 27th and commemorate the 95 year old artist’s four decades-long painting career inspired by the city he helped to create. Accompanying the exhibition\, the artist will host an Opening Reception on March 30th from 3-5pm. \nShowing interest in drawing and painting from a young age\, Frederick “Fritz” Kubitz was encouraged to train as an architect and received his master’s degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. As a student in the developing city\, he was immediately enthralled by Boston’s urban landscape. Upon graduation\, the young architect was offered a position at the firm Eero Saarinen & Associates. He would go on to build an impressive portfolio and participated in the design of the TWA Flight Center at the John F. Kennedy International Airport\, Dulles International Airport\, and the London Embassy. From there\, he was offered a position as a Jr. Partner in a large Boston firm where he went on to add to the architectural canvas that lay before him\, planning the expansion at Logan International Airport and designing several of its terminal buildings. He later started his own office\, designing academic buildings at Harvard and Tufts Universities\, and remodeling the old Fenway Theater/Biltmore Hotel to become the Berklee College of Music. \nThroughout his education and career as an architect\, Fritz continued to nurture his passion for painting\, eventually devoting himself to fine art\, creating first in watercolors and then in oils. Since 1990\, Mr. Kubitz has painted a staggering 2800 pieces. While his subjects come from throughout the US and Europe\, his most beloved scenes capture the vibrant and ever-changing cityscape of Boston and the surrounding landscapes of the New England Region. A quote from the American Watercolor Society Summer 2021 Newsletter expounds\, “Frederick Kubitz has an intuitive ability in choosing appealing subject matter\, plus a unique sense of style\, placement\, and dramatic use of lighting effects\, giving him a much honored place among New England painters.” Often working on location\, his paintings present Boston in an earnest\, luminescent\, natural light that calls back to the admiration he felt towards the city as a student. Meanwhile\, his architecture background enhances his compositions with a deep knowledge of structure and keen eye for detail. From memorializing its iconic and historic landmarks to documenting its citizens and visitors in quotidian moments of leisure\, Kubitz captures the beauty and energy of Boston’s every corner. All About Boston is an ode to a city Kubitz has dedicated his life to commemorating and quite literally\, shaping. \nOver the span of his career\, Kubitz’s paintings have toured nationwide to various museums and places of exhibition. His work can be found in the collections of many corporations\, financial institutions\, professional offices\, as well as private connoisseurs of art. In addition to being a member and former Vice President of The Guild\, Kubitz has served as the president of the New England Watercolor Society and the Wellesley Society of Artists. He is also a Signature Member of the American Watercolor Society and the American Society of Marine Artists as well as a member of the Rockport Art Association and the Copley Society of Boston. \nPress release courtesy of the Guild of Boston Artists
