Carol Bershad

Natick, MA

Carol’s artwork has always been informed by her love of the natural world and her training in scientific observation. She earned her master’s degree in biology from the University of Michigan and spent three idyllic summers studying biology in the Northern Woods of Michigan at the UM Biological Station. Her studies involved careful observations and making drawings in the field of a variety of plants and animals. Although Carol began drawing and painting over twenty years ago, her career in the sciences and education superseded her art. After retirement, she has had the opportunity to devote time to develop her craft and creative exploration.

Watercolor painting was a natural extension of her love for nature and many of her favorite subjects are landscapes and florals. She enjoys the spontaneity and luminosity of watercolors and the surprises they bring onto the paper. Carol has also found great inspiration in the tradition of Chinese Brush Painting; she appreciates the freedom of single brush strokes and letting whatever happens, happen.

Carol has also collaborated with Nan Rumpf to create a unique tool for watercolor artists: Art Sparks: An Inspiration Deck for Watercolor Artists. See www.artsparksdeck.com for more information.

Carol has studied with several teachers who have greatly influenced her work, including Sarah Alexander, Teri Malo, Nancy Howell, Nan Rumpf, Leslie Fehling, Shari Blaukopf, Gary Tucker, Mayee Futterman, Ma Quingxiong, and Jean Kigel. She is on the Newton Watercolor Society Board and has exhibited her artwork at the Massachusetts Audubon Broadmoor Sanctuary and at the annual Newton Watercolor Society show in Newton for the past two years. Her Going Bananas watercolor recently won Best in Show at the 2024 Newton Watercolor Society Annual Exhibit.
