In this demo, Hilary Hanson Bruel will provide an introduction to encaustic — a mixture of beeswax, damar resin, and pigment that is applied in layers and fused with heat. She will share a bit of the history of the medium, and will show us the tools and materials needed to work safely with it. Hilary will then demonstrate some of the techniques she uses to achieve transparency and texture in her own work. Hilary Hanson Bruel has a B.A. in Visual and Environmental Studies from Harvard University, where she completed a thesis in painting while also studying photography, sculpture, and design. Following a career in graphic design, she resumed painting in 2013 and began exhibiting and selling her art in 2018. Her work has been exhibited in regional galleries and museums including Gallery Twist, Galatea Fine Art, Truro Center for the Arts, The Art Complex Museum, and The Danforth Art Museum. Hilary works out of her home in Needham, serves on the boards of both the Needham and Newton Art Associations, and is a member of New England Wax.
