Laura Scheuerell
Watertown, MA
Laura Scheuerell is a painter and mixed media artist who uses her work to process daily life. Laura likes to think of her art as a memory bank that records impressions, marks special moments or inner thoughts, expresses sentiments, and has the power to usher a viewer into an alternate mental and emotional space. She pays attention to what captures her curiosity; it has always been her compass of balance. She is very grateful to work in a studio setting along with 7 other artists at The Howard Street Studios, located in Framingham, MA.
Laura’s process usually begins with making lists, sayings, ideas, and notes on any particular topic she’s interested in. She begins with keywords and identifying themes, then creates a word board and color ideas supporting her intent. Themes built around the topic of food have carried her throughout her life, drawn from earlier participation in serving in restaurants and prepping for caterers to later in her home life, as a mother to create a cookbook. A current series expresses her concerns for a growing, the very real humanitarian problem of Food Insecurity using art and info as part of the exposure and solution. Other themes of work have included, family, music (her husband is a jazz musician), and nature, as well as sentiments such as joy, wonder, love, belonging and waiting.
Laura grew up in Lewiston, NY, just a few miles north of Niagara Falls. The power and beauty of this natural wonder has inspired her latest (and life long fascination) series of mixed media: complete with wood, rocks, stones, found objects, and reflective objects fixed throughout acrylic painted canvas, and wooden 3-D pieces. This ongoing, growing series is a journey through the history of Niagara Falls, one that carries great reverence for Native Americans’ presence, investigates the occupation of the British, explores the influence of the prohibition bootleggers, the mob, the Canadian boat route for the underground railroad and the tourism presence in the 20th century.
