These landscapes are presented as portrait paintings that drive viewers to critically think about their world view, our environment , and their place within it: landscape paintings as being, doing, and finding out. Landscape painting is first and foremost the Artists’ expression of self within the context of the natural environment .
Mark’s recent work has developed to the edge of abstraction with an emphasis on color exploration. These landscape paintings ask viewers to explore visually different emotions and meanings. Richards refers to his paintings as works as “Color Season’s”. These ephemeral images lend themselves to active brush work, expressing the decisiveness and authority of touch. This technique suits the temporary nature of the motifs presented from nature with long, freely applied sweeps of thick paint coursing across each canvas; colors surging forward and back.
Each “Color Season” represents a place defined by color and emotion searching for and expressing the nonverbal and asking for immediate reflection by the viewer.
